My art journey
I am Susan Barrett-Kelly - a multidisciplinary artist working across sculpture, mosaics and fused glass. My practice is rooted in an ongoing exploration of form, fragment and the natural world.
With over twenty years of artistic development supported by degrees in photography and fine art I am currently expanding my practice studying Art and Contemporary Craft at West Dean. My work is driven by a fascination with the ways natural forms grow, evolve and connect-an interest that informs both my processes and the materials I use.
Central to my mosaic practice is the use of found tessera: fragments gathered from the world around me. The act of collecting is both physical and reflective, a process of noticing and preserving. Each piece is then cut, shaped and reassembled transforming it into something new while retaining trace of its origin. Through this process I explore ideas of memory, place and transformation.
Alongside this, my work in fused glass allows me to investigate colour, transparency and interactions of light offering a contrasting yet complementary approach to material art form.
My creative process balances intuition with intent, inspired by natural patterns - the flow of water, texture of stone the movement of leaves - I allow the materials to guide the work. The slow meditative nature of mosaic making fosters a deep emotional connection to the work as each tessera is chosen, manipulated and placed.
Through my practice I aim to create works that echo the rhythms of nature, inviting reflection on the relationship between material, memory and the environment.
